NYTimes Article: Food Companies Are Placing the Onus For Safety on the Consumer

This article in today's New York Times both troubles and angers me. Since when do manufacturers get to wash their hands (no pun intended) of product safety? They can't figure out where contaminants get into our processed foods, so they just say it's the consumer's fault if the product isn't cooked properly. And there are many people in this country who think government regulation is the devil's work. Really?? You think it's a bad thing to tell companies they HAVE to provide safe products?
